Museums and other must-visits of Kerkyra

Museum of Asian Art

In a separate wing of the Palace of Saint Michael and St George you will find the Museum of Asian Art. Art and objects from India, China, Japan and other eastern countries are displayed and well documented.

Archaeological Museum

Discover Corfu’s heritage in this excellent museum. The Gorgon Pediment, found at the temple of Artemis, is on display here.

Byzantine Art Museum

An appealing old church, the Church of Antovouniotissa, houses this museum. A wide variety of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons are displayed along with other religious artefacts.

Municipal Art Gallery

Situated in the east wing of the Palace of Saint Michael and St George this gallery displays the work of local artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. A separate wing has exhibitions of Modern Art which are changed on a regular basis.

Solomos Museum

A must for anyone interested in Dionysius Solomos (the world famous Greek national poet)

British Cemetery

A garden paradise, amidst the buildings of Corfu, the British Cemetery is well worth a visit. Walk through the cool of the trees and admire the fine and unusual headstones set amongst a varied selection of plants and flowers. Admission is free but a donation can be made towards its upkeep. The cemetery dates from the time of the British protectorate.

Catholic Cemetery

Larger than the British Cemetery, this is also worth a visit for the gardens. The cemetery is situated on way of the main approaches to Corfu Town.

Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George

Originally built by the British during the Protectorate in the 1820’s in a neo-classical style, it housed the British Government on Corfu. When Corfu became part of Greece it was then used as a summer house by the Greek royals. It now houses Art Galleries and is open to the public who can wander through the impressive state rooms that have been restored.

Vidos Island

A short boat trip from Corfu’s old port will take you to the picturesque island of Vidos. This traffic free island is the perfect place to spend a relaxing day. There are several walking trails on the island and a selection of secluded beaches. While on the island you can also visit the Serbian museum and cemetery and Russian & British built fortresses. There is also a restaurant on the island.

Access: Caique services run daily every 30 mins until late evening.

Patounis Soap Factory

This family run factory has been making olive oil soap for over a hundred years using a recipe which has been handed down through the generations of Patounis. There are now very few factories left in the world that produce stamped soap using the traditional methods.

The Old City (PALEOPOLIS)

The headland on which Kanoni is situated is the site of the original settlements in the Corfu Town area. For those interested in archaeology it is a must. You can visit the ruins of Alkinoo’s Port Dockyard – part of the ancient market place; a Roman thermae; ancient market place; a Roman mansion with thermae; the sanctuary of Artemis; the temple of Hera; the temple of Kardaki and ancient residences. It also has some of the earliest Christian building on the island such as the old Christian Basilica of Paleopolis and the temple of Saints Jason and Sossipater to name but a few.

Some of the museums charge an entrance fee while others are free to visitors. Prices are displayed at the entrance if there should be a charge.
